I became a real estate agent after thinking about that or becoming an appraiser instead. I know that realtors make decent money, but Sacramento appraisers do, too. I ended up talking to people in both fields to make my end decision. A lot of people pick a career early on, but I was getting started late with mine. After watching many of my younger relatives quickly choosing what they wanted to do career-wise, I knew that I needed to make a decision. It was embarrassing to hear that my 25 year old niece had graduated from college and had become an engineer at such a young age, but I was unable to make a decision about what I wanted to do until I was 43 years old!
It took me 6 months to study for and pass the test in my state so that I could get my real estate license. I was getting a little bit nervous that I wouldn’t be able to handle it. However, every night when I came home from my job as a secretary, I studied hard. I sat down with a glass of hot tea, and I studied all night long until I went to bed. I took the test once and I failed it, but that did not deter me. I came home and studied each night for another 2 months after that. I memorized everything and made sure that I knew exactly what I needed to know to pass that test on my second try.
I used to say that I wasn’t much of a people person, but I have really grown to love all of my customers. I think it shows via the good customer service that I offer people. Many of my customers tell others about me when they hear that someone is looking to buy a home. I now have people calling me to say that they have been referred to me. I think I finally found what will make me happy in the work world.
